This method involves using two
UK fifty pence pieces. It also involves a tea tray with square
corners. Alternatively a cardboard box, shoebox lid, square
biscuit tin lid, etc. Anything with a flat base and a edge.
Get some sticky labels and stick them on the coins. Fifty pence
pieces are seven sided and one of them now has to have its sides
numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, whilst the other has its seven sides
numbered 0,7,14,21,28,35,42. The idea is that the fifty pence
pieces can be rolled up and down the edge of the tray, box lid,
etc, coming to rest with one of the seven edges in contact with
the edge of the tray. Effectively they have been turned into a
pair of seven sided dice. Adding the two scores together
invariably produces a random number between 1 and 49. And when
you've finished rolling your numbers, you can peel the labels off
and still use the money to buy the lottery ticket.
Star quality: The alternative use of money without it costing
anything. The idea of having seven sided dice almost ready-made.
Variations: Using twenty pence pieces isn't any cheaper.
